Coaches Corner
Pony League Preseason Jamboree Drills
The OYSS Development Committee and OYSS Board have approved a progressive development system for players entering mini soccer (U06-U10). All teams that participate within the locally administered leagues shall comply with these approved rules. Some reasons for introducing the Progressive Development System include: 1. The number of players on the field is appropriate to the development stages of children in each age group as well as meeting the needs of the player’s level of social development. 2. The use of small-sided games maximizes player contact time with the ball and speeds skill improvement. It provides an excellent environment to nurture skill development, creativity and most importantly, self esteem. 3. It provides the coach with a greater opportunity to place emphasis on teaching individual players rather than managing a large group. Concern for player and team development is given greater emphasis.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SMALL SIDED GAMES U06 – 3 vs 3 with no goalkeeper. This is designed to give every player frequent opportunity to kick the ball and to provide a playing environment that is focused on having fun with the ball. One coach per team is allowed on the field to provide instruction to his team. U07 – 3 vs 3 same as above. It allows for the development and understanding of the soccer triangle, which is the basic unit concept in soccer. U08 – 5 vs 5 with one of the 5 being a goalie. No coaches on the field of play unless to attend to an injured player. U09 – 6 vs 6 with one of the 6 being a goalie. U10 – 6 vs 6 with one of the 6 being a goalie.
OYSS MINI SOCCER RULES 1. Game starts at center. U06/U07 can pass back. U-08 - U10 must pass forward. 2. U06 & U07division -there are no goalies. U08 - U10 are to have goalies. 3. U08 goalies can use their hands to pick the ball up on a pass back from their teammates only if it is inside their penalty area. U09 & U10 goalies cannot pick the ball up if it is passed back to them by their teammate. 4. Free kicks - No direct free kicks. Only indirect free kicks allowed. Defending team must be at least 6 yards from the ball. 5. Penalty kicks – indirect only. Wall can be set up but must be at least 6 yards from the ball. 6. Corner kicks – defending team must be at least 6 yards away from the ball. 7. Goal kicks – taken anywhere in goal area. Other team must be at least 6 yards away. 8. Sideline out of bounds – U06 and U07 by indirect free kick. U08–U10 by throw in. U08's will be allowed one re-throw if the first one in incorrect. 9. Offside – No extreme goal poaching allowed. In U08 – U10 the positioning of a player in the opponent’s end of the field in anticipation of a long ball, when the ball and other players are in or near the opposite end of the field is contrary to the aims of player development. The referee shall take appropriate action to prevent this kind of play by awarding an indirect free kick to the offended team at a location to be determined by the referee. In U10 the referee will call, in his judgement, any obvious offsides. 10. Scoring - Scores are not kept. 11. Goals - U06, U07 & U08...no goals can be scored inside the goal area. 12. Duration – There are to be two 25-minute halves for U08 - U10. 13. Breaks - U06 & U07 are to break as often as mutually agreed to by the coaches. 14. Referees – In U06 and U07 no formal referees will be assigned. Coaches will referee and time keep. In U08 – U10 referees will be assigned. 15. Slide
tackling is not permitted. Any player slide tackling will be fouled and
the referee will make the call and award an indirect free kick to
the opposing team. Any player still committing this foul after the
first offence in this game must be taken off by the coach for
10 minutes for the foul and another player will be substituted into the
game. OYSS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM – MINI SOCCER 1. Institute small-sided games to maximize player contact time with the ball resulting in skill improvement. 2. To provide, where possible, a lower payer-to-coach ratio, which allows the coach to teach basic skill development rather than just, manage a large group.3. To provide each coach with the Canadian Soccer Associations skills assessment format for utilization throughout the year to use to measure basic soccer skills improvement. I.e. personal best record. Plans are to implement a formal process at the U9/U10 level at the beginning and end of the year. 4. To provide CSA level I and II coaching certification courses. 5. The Development coordinator will endeavor to attend at least one practice session per team to provide assistance and advice concerning the development program. 6. To ensure all coaches are aware of the various educational soccer videos and to encourage their usage. 7. To pilot a “junior development” keener program at the U11 & U10 level. If you would like to find out more about the program, please phone Dan Mahony at 752-3005.
